Don’t Get Spooked Out of Your Savings This Halloween

Did you know Halloween is one of the largest shopping holidays of the year? Although you may be in a rush to buy costumes and decorations, don’t let unethical businesses trick you out of your hard-earned money.

Here are few things to watch out for this Halloween:

  • Haunted theme events. Be careful of pop-up Halloween events that are lacking in information. It’s smart to contact the venue to confirm that the event is actually happening. Read the refund policy carefully – some organizers won’t provide refunds even if the event is cancelled! For more tips on purchasing tickets to fun runs and other themed events, click here and here.
  • Pop-up Halloween stores. Although these temporary stores may be a great place to buy costumes, they can leave customers hanging when they inevitably close once Halloween is over. Make sure to understand the return policy, use a credit card, and research the business at org.
  • Online shopping. If you’re looking to find a unique costume, the Internet can be a great place to start! Unfortunately, consumers reported more than 2,700 online shopping scams to BBB Scam Tracker in 2016. After you pay for something online, you either receive something that looks nothing like what you thought you ordered, or you receive nothing at all! Make sure to check out the business’ BBB Business Profile at org, pay with a credit card, and read the return policy before making a purchase. For a BBB guide to savvy online shopping, click here.
