Your BBB, in partnership with San Mateo Credit Union and Ripcord Digital, a BBB Accredited Business, will hold its bi-annual “Secure Your ID Day” on Saturday, Oct. 14 at San Mateo Credit Union in South San Francisco. Bay Area residents and small businesses are encouraged to attend the event and take a key step in identity theft protection by shredding their sensitive paper documents on-site. BBB staff will also be present to provide expert advice and tips for identity theft protection.
Identity theft is a serious problem: in 2016, consumers nationwide reported around 400,000 identity theft complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). According to the FTC, it’s frequently perpetrated through methods like purse snatching, dumpster diving, phishing emails, and spyware.
“Documents that contain your Social Security Number, account numbers or any other personal information should be shredded before being disposed of”, said Lori Wilson, President and CEO of BBB serving the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern Coastal California. “Shredding sensitive documents is a key step in avoiding identity theft, and people need to be protecting themselves. Trust me, taking the extra time to do this regularly will pay off; getting your identity stolen is not only frustrating and worrisome, it takes an awful lot of time and energy to correct.”
